Adam Fuerstenberg

To the Fuerstenberg Family GLORIA, ZACH, DANA & CHILDREN, GLENDA< JOEL & BENJAMIN ARIELA and ANNA, I can remember the first time that I met Adam, 60 years ago on Clark St. in Montreal, with his good friend, my late husband at my side. Adam as usual was always at the center of all our discussions, he was gracious and understanding. His mind was like a sponge, bright. knowledgeable and always had a correct answer to every topic. Gloria, I am so saddened to hear of Adam's passing. He was a true friend, and a scholar of all things Jewish. Most important however is that he was a loving husband and devoted dad. I will think of him often and fondly.

Dear Gloria and family. Boruch Dayan Emes. Adam was a generation older than I so I didn't know him well. But, absent our extended family, post-holocaust in Montreal, his mother, Aunti Regina, and Unkl Chenyik were our aunt and uncle. An unbelievable great mishpocha. May Adam be a melitz Yasher for us all down here, and we in turn, especially his offspring and students who are likened to children, should be evidence for his tzidkus up there. I was so very saddened to have received the news, that Adam, a beloved, husband, father and grandfather, and very dear friend to all that he knew and had workded with. I'd like to extend to all of you my sincere condolences on the loss of your beloved husband, father, and grandfather. I had the privilege of not only having known Adam z"l, but also having known his parents, Auntie Regina and Uncle Henyik, z"l. They were special people who raised an extraordinary son. They had crossed the Polish border with young Adam in tow as they fled the Nazis and survived the war in Russia. Luckily, they ultimately made it to Montreal, where Adam grew up in a society, free from persecution. There, he dedicated his life's work to preserving the heritage of his people: its language, history and culture. One of the more surreal moments of my life occurred four years ago when my husband Yoel and I were on a heritage mission to Poland, visiting what was the Auschwitz concentration camp. It was a rainy summer's day. From the mist a voice called our names, and out stepped none other than Adam! He was leading a group of history teachers (not Jewish) from schools all across Canada, teaching them about the Holocaust and how to teach about the Holocaust. For this, too, was part of his mission. I feel blessed that I got to spend a little time with Adam over the past 28 years. He and Gloria hosted us when we were considering moving to Toronto back then. We were received with such warmth and hospitality. And every time since then that we've gotten together, grabbed a bite to eat, Adam always showed such interest and concern, always brought along a book to give us. He was like a big brother to my husband Yoel, their parents having been best friends from Europe, and then becoming family to one another in Canada, where they had to raise their children with no parents to help them, thanks to the Nazis. So Adam became a big brother to Yoel; his parents became his auntie and uncle. How precious were the past ten years that Yoel got to spend regularly visiting with Adam and Gloria, ever since his work brought him to Toronto monthly. He is so grateful, in particular, that he was able to maintain a close relationship with Adam right up until his passing. May you all be comforted by your wonderful memories of Adam, an exceptional human being who touched the lives of so many with his kindness, his smile and twinkly eyes - his personal legacy, and the impressive academic, scholarly legacy he has left the world. המקום ינחם אתכם בתוך שאר אבלי ציון וירושלים. יהי זיכרו ברוך.

I extend my sincest condolences. I was lucky to have spent a bit of time with Adam during our educational trip to Holocaust sites. He was always so kind and positive. I enjoyed chatting with him about cultural issues. A wonderful and passionate man who contributed so much. He will be missed.

My sincerest condolences to the Fuerstenberg family. I met Adam through the Jewish Book Awarda and the Holocaust Centre. Adam was a dynamic person who has left an incredible mark on the Jewish Community. He was always such a gentleman, scholar and warm and friendly person who was dedicated to education and the Jewish Community. Just learned of Mr. Feurstenberg's passing, we are so sorry.. We have fond memories of him when we first me on the Pesach program 2 yrs ago. He was chatting with us on the bus to the Niagara outlet mall. He was sharing his philosophy on life and was so amiable and spirited. So much in "the present moment", and excited about the trip. May you only know simchas
