Amri Susman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and a true hero, passed away peacefully in Toronto, Ontario, on May 8, 2026, just days after celebrating his 100th birthday. Born on May 3, 1926, in Czechoslovakia, Amri’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and the enduring spirit of humanity.
As a young man, Amri faced unimaginable challenges during one of history’s darkest chapters. He was a survivor of the Holocaust, having escaped the clutches of Nazi persecution through the courageous efforts of the Kastner Train. This harrowing journey not only saved his life but also shaped his unwavering commitment to family and community. Amri carried the scars of his past with dignity, transforming his pain into a source of strength that inspired all who knew him.
In 1948, Amri’s bravery took on a new form as he fought valiantly in the War of Independence as a member of the elite Palmach Brigade Chayot Hanegev. His contributions during this pivotal time in history earned him recognition as a decorated war hero. Amri’s dedication to his homeland and his fellow soldiers exemplified his deep-rooted belief in justice and freedom, values he instilled in his family and those around him.
Amri was not just a soldier; he was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Leah. Their partnership was a beautiful testament to love and commitment, built on a foundation of mutual respect and shared dreams. Together, they created a nurturing home filled with warmth, laughter, and the sweet melodies of music—a passion that Amri cherished throughout his life. He found joy in song, often filling the air with his favorite tunes, creating a legacy of love that resonated through generations.
As a father, Amri was a guiding light to his sons, Edison and Leonard, and a cherished father-in-law to Deena. He took immense pride in his role as a patriarch, always encouraging his children to pursue their dreams and embrace life with open hearts. His wisdom and kindness shaped their lives, and his unwavering support provided them with the strength to navigate their own journeys.
Amri’s legacy continued to flourish through his grandchildren: Ryan, Joshua, Robyn, Zachary, David, Tyler, Leah Elena and his great grandson Yitzchak Salomon. He adored each of them, showering them with love and affection, and imparting life lessons that will forever echo in their hearts. His stories of resilience and courage became cherished memories, teaching them the importance of family, perseverance, and the power of hope.
In his later years, Amri remained a pillar of strength and love for his family. His laughter was infectious, and his spirit was indomitable. He embraced every moment, reminding those around him of the beauty of life and the importance of cherishing each day. His family will forever hold him in their hearts, carrying forward the values he instilled and the love he shared.
Amri Susman leaves behind a legacy that transcends time—a legacy of love, courage, and resilience. As we mourn his passing, we celebrate the incredible life he lived and the profound impact he had on all who were fortunate enough to know him.
