KORNBLUM, Muriel (nee Franklin)

Passed away peacefully on Monday, May 13, 2024 at Niagara Health St. Catharines site.

Beloved wife of the late David Kornblum.  Daughter of the late Albert and Lucy Franklin (nee Cohen).  Mother and Mother-in-law of Joanne and Michael Fisher.  Safta of Dylan and Heather Fisher and Aaron and Nicole Fisher.  Great Safta of Elle Pearl Fisher.  Sister of the late Jean Simons, sister-in-law of Sammy Simons.  Sister-in-law, Aunt and Great Aunt to many on both sides of the Pond.

Born on June 9, 1935 in London, England, Muriel immigrated to Canada in 1959, met her husband, David and married in 1961. In 1965, they moved to Oshawa and then became devoted members of the Jewish community at the Beth Zion Congregation, Hadassah and B’nai Brith, until David’s untimely passing in 1985.

Trained as a hairdresser in England, Muriel refreshed her skills while still in Oshawa, commuting back and forth to Toronto, worked as a hairdresser in Oshawa, before moving to Toronto to be closer to her daughter.

The Jewish community in Toronto played an important role for Muriel.  She enjoyed volunteering at the Betel Centre and Sar-El.  She met so many people over the years and especially during her 18 volunteer trips to Israel with her fellow Sar-El volunteers.

Until August, 2022, Muriel enjoyed living in Thornhill where she spent over 30 years.  After moving to the Niagara Region to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law, she moved into the Grand Canal Retirement Residence in Welland where she met and made numerous new friends.  Muriel enjoyed her movies and live entertainment at the residence.  Thank you to the dedicated staff at The Grand Canal and to Home and Community Care Support Services who assisted with Muriel’s care at the residence.  We would like to also extend a big thank you to the caring staff at The Henley House Long Term Care facility in St. Catharines and the palliative care team on Floor 3A of the Niagara Health St. Catharines site for their compassionate care during Muriel’s final days.  We are very grateful for the support, kindness and spiritual comfort shown by Rabbi Zalman Zaltzman to Muriel over the past months since her move into the Henley House.

Muriel will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
